TY - CONF T1 - 23. The Effect of Nutrient Pollution on Aquatic Life AU - Burge, Jancy O. AU - Ndiaye, Fatimatou Z. AU - Fruche, Leslie O. AB - Nutrient Pollution and the Effect on Local Aquatic Life Nutrient pollution in water has become a problem that affects wildlife and humans. Both phosphorus and nitrogen are essential nutrients that are needed to promote stability and great health in aquatic ecosystems. In excess, these nutrients can hinder growth and lead to nutrient pollution through the production of many algal blooms, which can be detrimental. An increase in algal blooms reduces or eliminates oxygen that is available for aquatic life. Since nutrient pollution in water has become a problem that affects both wildlife and humans, we propose to partner with Elachee Nature Center to test streams for the presence of nitrates and phosphates. We plan to measure nitrates, phosphates, and algal growth in both heavily and less heavily impacted streams. Nitrates and phosphates will be correlated with algal growth, and all three of these variables will be compared between heavily and less heavily impacted streams. Upon completion of the research, we expect to find that areas with increased human and animal activity to have higher levels of nitrates and phosphates thus increasing the production of algal blooms.
