TY - GEN T1 - Historical Analysis of College Consolidation AU - Hughes, Katie AU - Jenkins, Starlett AU - Mayo, Brent AB - NGCSU and Gainesville State University have entered into a forced merger process. Forced mergers are imposed on institutions by legislative bodies, and our research shows that these meet with little success when geographic and cultural differences exist between the proposed merging institutions. Our analysis of historical evidence indicates that geographical and cultural cleavages will likely prevent the desired outcomes of the merger from being realized. The conclusion drawn our review of previous merger attempts, both national and international, is that a forced merger should not be attempted if there is not a strong and immediate need, such as one institution failing to serve its mission.
