TY - GEN T1 - Flexible Seating In The Classroom AU - McAnally, Lisa AB - Flexible Seating Lisa McAnally Abstract: The field of education is continuously looking for research or developing strategies that will enable students to work at their best potential and reach their goals to be successful in school. For those strategies to work, two factors play an important role, behavior in the classroom and higher test scores. This research will examine the aspect of seating in the classroom, traditional seating compared to flexible seating. When traditional seating is discussed it will be referring to the classroom make-up of desks and chairs in arranged rows, assigned by the teacher. Flexible seating, however, is based on the concept of student choice with various seating options. The focus in education is to increase learning, most often measured by increase test scores, therefore learning has to be optimized for achievement to occur, and for maximum achievement to occur behavior must be positive. The purpose of this study is to gather data to test the impact flexible seating has on classroom behavior. This study will test the following hypotheses: 1. Does flexible seating have an impact on student behavior? 2. What impact does flexible seating have on academic achievement in reading? 3. Does it decrease or increase on-task behavior in the classroom? 4. Which types of seating do the students prefer in order to do their best work? The results will be shared with the education community to make decisions about using this type of seating as an intervention to increase positive behavior and student achievement.
