AB - The United States emits about 17.56 metric tons of CO2, 3 times more than China’s emissions, making us the top country of CO2 emission per capita in the world. The facts are clear, yet political and popular denial remain by the manipulation of the public’s inherent tendency towards confirmation bias. This presentation will examine the seeming “willful blindness” that political and business leaders seem to encourage about the imminent danger and long-term effects climate change. Despite significant evidence that shows the critical stage the Earth is in, these leaders, along with powerful business interests, use the news media and political rhetoric to manipulate the opinions of the electorate which affects environmental policy decisions by legislators. National acts designed to protect the environment, such as the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Mammal Protection Act have been proposed and passed, but are now under threat of repeal or reduction in enforcement as a result of this manipulation of perspective. Even global acts such as the Paris Agreement are under threat of termination because business leaders, supported by the current administration. This presentation will explore the depth of the political and cultural difficulty, due to the psychological and sociological power of media, of making real change to environmental protection policy in the United States.
