TY - GEN T1 - Set Free AU - Pilgrim, Cari AB - “Set Free” is a captivating body of work that portrays the struggle from addiction to freedom based on the true story of the artist herself. Each piece expresses a different stage in Pilgrim’s journey. Pilgrim was greatly impacted by the introduction to methamphetamines at a young age and it almost took her life. Pilgrim comments on her work expressing, “At one point or another we all experience life changing circumstances. Whether it’s going through addiction, losing a loved one, struggling with depression, or finances… whatever we endure shapes our character.” Pilgrim incorporates deep, meaningful symbolism through enchanting flowing fabric. This carries the viewer through a unique, significant parallel that marries her story with the seasons of nature as well as with her faith. Pilgrim hopes through her transparency that the audience will walk away inspired with feelings that there’s always hope, and there’s always freedom from the things that entangle a beautiful life. Pilgrim's influences help to create a strong body of work. Her conceptional influence is Nan Goldin. Goldin is an American photographer who grew up in Boston. Goldin was intrigued and inspired with photographing depict drug use, violence, aggressive couples, sex, traveling, and autobiographical moments. Goldin's photographs capture very real and raw experiences that Pilgrim emotionally relates to on a deep level. Formally, Pilgrim is inspired by Annie Leibovitz who is a famous American portrait photographer. Leibovitz has worked with Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and Vogue among numerous others. Leibovitz uses captivating lighting in her photographs, and magically marries her portraits with what can be at times surreal natural environments. Lastly, Pilgrim is also formally inspired by Daniel Wurtzel. Wurtzel creates air sculptures with fabric and other materials surrounded by fans.
